ATC’s Summer Reading List

If you love to read – here are a few books that should be on your summer reading list:

The Shift: One Nurse, Twelve Hours, Four Patients’ Lives by Theresa Brown, RN 

Teresa Brown, practicing nurse and New York Times columnist, details all that can happen in just one day on a busy teaching hospital’s cancer ward. In a very short amount of time, decisions are made, hopes are gained and lives can be changed forever. This book gives an insight into daily struggles as well as larger issues regarding medicine in this country.

They Called Them Angels: American Military Nurses of World War II by Kathi Jackson 

These are the stories of the brave women who saved lives during World War II. This is the firsthand accounts from army and navy nurses who served both stateside and overseas. Their time is detailed from joining the military, through their active service to their lives today. These are women who had experiences in a very difficult time and still today bear emotional scars.

Jessies House of Needles by John Algate 

Jessie Williamson is a missionary nurse who devoted 35 years of her life to tribal people in West Papua. She watched them transform in their stone age society through religious and political turmoil, life and death struggles, awful weather conditions and the clash of old and new beliefs. Jessie built a network of medics and midwives who continue her work today.
