There are some jobs that are not just jobs – they are part of who we are – police officers, firemen and nurses fall into this category. You can’t turn off being a nurse. If you are on a plane or train at a park or a concert or just visiting with family and friends if someone needs medical attention, you spring into action. When people around you are panicking and losing control, your skills and training kick into gear and you respond. It’s like autopilot, it turns on and takes over. And when others applaud you for what you have done to help save a life or care for an injury or calm someone down – you don’t understand why. You don’t feel you deserve special recognition or thanks – it’s just what you do…who you are and you feel lucky to have nursing be a part of your life.
